Everyone has secrets they don’t want people to know, or things that they’re embarrassed about, but it’s really important that you confide in your lawyer and tell him or her the truth.

Your family law attorney always needs to know your entire situation in order to properly represent you. What your lawyer doesn’t know can cause him or her to be blind-sided in court. Hiding the truth from your lawyer can also negatively impact your attorney-client relationship. As embarrassing as it may be to let some of the skeletons out of your closet to your attorney, it will be much worse to have it happen in court or during negotiations.

Remember, there are three people in life you should never lie to: Yourself, your doctor and your lawyer.

Tell your attorney everything and so that he or she can come up with a plan on how to mitigate the circumstances, whether it’s your high value assets, children with other coparents, or any other secret you believe is holding you back or could hurt your case. We will figure out a plan to handle it together.
